Have you heard that the most successful people are early risers? Night owls may be annoyed at this(former night owl here), but studies show that morning people tend to be the most productive and most successful. With that being said, let’s take a look at how to start your morning off right and set yourself up to be more organized and productivethroughout your day.

14 Things You Can Do To Start Your Morning Off Right
Wake up Early
Yep, that simple:) Generally speaking, early can range from 4-6am.
I will never forget when I went to my son’s pediatrician and asked him how to get my 2 yr old son to sleep past 4 am. His answer was simple. “His body is signaling him to wake up and there’s nothing you can do. 4 o’clock is an acceptable wake-up time, besides the most successful people start their day early. You can accomplish a lot by getting up a few hours earlier.”
That was 7 years ago and I have to say it was life-changing. I thought about what the Dr said and I used it to my advantage. Ever since that time, I have officially become an early riser. My son grew out of that wake-up time, but it didn’t stop me from setting my alarm between 5 and 6 every day. I started to enjoy that time to myself and my body now naturally wakes up at that time.
You don’t need to set your alarm an hour earlier right away. Start gradually and get up earlier and earlier every day. Begin by setting your alarm 15 mins earlier and get up! Don’t hit the snooze. Then set it a half-hour earlier the next week . Do this until you get to that optimal time where you are truly getting a head start on your day.
Quiet time
I’m sure I can speak for most Moms, that extra hour or half-hour of quiet time for yourself is priceless.
Sit down with your favorite morning drink whether it be coffee, tea or lemon water. Spend some quiet time praying or reading a devotional book, Bible or any book of your choice. It’s important to start your day calm with a clear head. Not rushed and frantic. Beginning your day this way will bring that calmness to the rest of the day and will help you see everything with a clearer perspective.
Let the Sunlight in
Getting natural sunlight will make you feel awake and energized. Let the light into your room to give yourself an automatic boost to start your day. Keeping your house dark will just make you feel more tired and less likely to be motivated to get up and go!
Eat!
Don’t skip breakfast. Doctors know what they’re talking about when they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you skip you are likely to make unhealthy choices for the rest of the day. You will feel more lethargic and will not feel as clear headed. Eat a healthy nutritious breakfast(like these healthy muffins!) and you are guaranteed to function better.
Exercise
Okay, so this one might be pushing it to add this into your morning routine. For me personally, I don’t like to work out super early. No matter how much energy I do have I don’t enjoy working out first thing. I wish I did, but I prefer waiting till later in the day. I know there are many who love to get up and get their workout in before the kids get up. I think it’s fantastic and if you have the energy to do that than I highly recommend it. Get that workout in first so it’s out of the way. It will put you on track for making healthy choices for the rest of the day as well.

Get Dressed Up
If you have to go into an office, this is obvious, but if you work from home or are a stay at home mom this might not be. It’s so important to get dressed and take care of yourself in the morning. You will feel so much more productive and feel more confident. Sitting in your pajamas all day and not brushing your hair or styling it a little will definitely harbor your productivity.
It may not seem like it, but think about how you feel after you shower and put something decent on. It can be something as simple as putting mascara on, wearing your hair down or wearing your favorite lip gloss.

No doubt you’ll feel more energized and confident. I think this is so important for those that are at home all day. You need to pretend you are going somewhere!
What’s for Dinner
Think about it now if you haven’t planned ahead. Depending on the time you woke up and how much extra time you allowed yourself make sure you know what you’re having for dinner.
Nothing is worse than not knowing what you’re having when it’s 5:30 or later and you’re family is starving! The chicken is in the freezer and you realize you have no time to eat before getting the kids to practice.
If you have a busy night planned throw the dinner together in the morning. Marinate the chicken, throw it in the crockpot etc.
If I don’t do this the, “What am I going to make for dinner,” just looms over me all day. I love when dinner time rolls around and I already have it done.
This is one of the most important steps for me in starting my morning off right! It’s the best feeling and it creates less stress at a time that is very busy. With after school sports and homework, this is a simple step that saves me my sanity!

Plan The Day
I like to plan the night before, but a lot of people plan the day of. Either way, it’s important to plan and know what you need to get done for the day. What’s on your mind and what tasks do you need to complete today? What are you hoping to accomplish today? Write it down in your planner or put it on your phones to do list. If you don’t plan ahead you’re sure to miss something!
Do The Things You DON’T Want To Do First
Don’t let the tasks that you’re dreading weigh on your mind all day. If you have that hanging over your shoulders it can ruin your whole day without even realizing it. It will always be lingering in the back of your mind.
By doing the things that weigh you down first thing in the morning, you will feel more calm and relaxed. It will free you up to enjoy the rest of the day.
Don’t procrastinate! Get it done and over with so you can focus on the good stuff.

Stay Away from Technology
This seems to be a top recommendation among most, but I don’t totally agree with it. If your alone time allows you extra time then I don’t see anything wrong with checking the news, sports, financials etc. However, if you get sucked into checking social media or scrolling Pinterest, then definitely stay away from it! It’s so easy to scroll mindlessly and then you realize you spent an hour doing nothing! It kills time. If you want to be efficient then it’s best to not grab the phone first thing. Save that for later in the day after you get your important stuff done first.
Additional Suggestions To Start Your Morning Off Right
- Throw a load of laundry in. If you have a large family and have trouble keeping up with the laundry try to throw a load in first thing when you wake up. You will feel much better doing it little by little than leaving it all till the weekends and feeling overwhelmed.
- Don’t leave the house with dishes in the sink. Coming home to a sink full of dishes will leave you feeling stressed. Rinse off your breakfast dishes and put them in the dishwasher.
- Make your bed. I don’t know why this simple task does this, but it will make you feel organized if you make your bed everyday. A messy bed really takes over a room and can make you feel like a mess! Add making your bed to your morning routine and see what a difference it makes.
- Clean the bathroom after everyone is done getting ready. My kids are famous for leaving the toothpaste out, toothpaste in the sink etc. Take a Clorox wipe, clean up the mess and make sure the bathroom countertop is clean. It takes ten seconds and you’ll be glad you did it.
Developing A Healthy Morning Routine Takes Time
Even if you only incorporate a few of these tasks you will start to see a change and will want to do more.
You don’t have to do all these things at once either. Slowly implement each task into your morning routine. At first waking up earlier will be hard, but eventually, your body will get used to it and it will get much easier as time goes on.
Remember that it takes 30 days for a habit to form so keep it up for over a month and it will become part of your life naturally.
If you embrace a daily routine and implement these simple steps to start your morning off right you are going to set yourself up for a more successful day and diminish the stress in your life. You will be more productive, have more energy and will have a more positive mindset to get through the day.
