Small Full Bathroom Remodel: Before and After
Before the Remodel
The original bathroom featured dark cabinetry, plain white tile(it was originally that powdered blue), and an overall dated look. The bulky vanity felt too heavy for the space, and the shower lacked any special design elements. While functional, it didn’t reflect our personal style or make the most of the small area.
I took this picture below right before we removed the vanity.. you can at least get the idea of what it was like:) The upper cabinets made the room feel so small. Way too chunky and heavy for a tiny bathroom.

The Design Plan
This is the only full bathroom in our home( family of five) and it needed to be functional!! We wanted to brighten up the room, make it feel larger, and add practical, yet stylish touches. Here’s what we decided:
- Subway Tile: Classic and timeless, we chose white subway tile for the shower walls. The clean lines instantly modernize the space while keeping it bright.
- Shower Niches: To improve functionality, we added two cutouts in the shower for holding shampoo, body wash, and other essentials. These niches are framed with hexagon mosaic tiles for a stylish contrast.
- Modern Vanity: We wanted the vanity to have a light wood finish and be more functional. The old was too heavy and made the space look smaller
- Neutral Color Palette: Light, neutral tones make the room feel open and fresh.

The Remodel Process

- Tile Removal: The original tiles were completely removed. This step allowed us to start fresh with the new subway tile and make space for the shower niches. We also removed the floor tile as well.
- Subway Tile Installation: The subway tile was installed with dark gray grout. The niches were framed with hexagon mosaic tiles to break up the uniformity and add a pop of visual interest.
- New Vanity: The double sink has been a game changer for us. Like I said, the 5 of us share this bathroom and with busy mornings the double sink has been amazing!! More than one of us can wash our face or brush our teeth at the same time. I absolutely love the lighter wood and the modern feel of the vanity. It’s the perfect blend of storage and design. It’s compact enough for the space but provides plenty of storage. (I’ll link similar vanities below!)
- Final Touches: Shower Hooks for our poufs and a removable shower head as it make hair washing a lot easier for my daughter! Also installed a shower filter because we have very hard water.
After the Remodel
We are so happy with the transformation!
The bright white subway tiles. large round mirror and modern vanity make the room feel twice its size. The shower niches are not only functional but also add a pop of interest! This small bathroom now reflects our style and is way way more functional!!!

Since our upgrade a few years ago I have replaced the light fixtures. These are the new ones I got from Amazon and I love them!
The wall color is Agreeable Gray. I’ve used this color in a few rooms of my home. It’s so good like the name. It’s just agreeable:)
Tips for Your Small Bathroom Remodel
